Graphic communications encompasses the processes and industries involved in creating, developing, producing, and distributing products that use words or images to convey information, ideas, and emotions. At Clemson University, the Department of Graphic Communications offers a Bachelor of Science degree that prepares students for professional careers in printing, publishing, packaging graphics, digital media, content creation, and the broader communication industry. The curriculum adopts a holistic approach, guiding students from creative concept to actualization, and includes two internships to provide real-world experience and career preparation.
During my time at Clemson in the Graphic Communications program, I was able to define the direction I wanted to take after graduation. Through both coursework and involvement in various clubs, I discovered the aspects of design I was passionate about—and those I wanted to avoid in my career.
These experiences allowed me to deepen my skills with Adobe Suite and learn hands-on production techniques using external devices for printing. They also helped me refine my approach to design, particularly in terms of accessibility and user experience (UX/UI). I learned the importance of considering accessibility needs and planning carefully before implementing a design, especially for projects that involve physical printing.
My studies helped me shape my design process, where I now strive to view projects from multiple perspectives. I prioritize creating work that’s cohesive, easily digestible, and user-friendly. Ultimately, my time at Clemson gave me a clear understanding of my career direction, showing me the important considerations in producing thoughtful, effective designs.
